Impact quote
We’re pleased to have been working with Sigmat (now Remagin), UK leader in light gauge steel framing, on this important scheme. Remagin have made excellent progress in assembling the structural frames, floor slabs, and external walls for the new apartment blocks, and successfully topped-out the first apartment block in August 2023. These homes will deliver a huge boost to the city centre. The more people we have living and working in the new community, the more they will spend in our shops, cafes, bars and restaurants, and enjoy everything Sunderland has to offer. I can’t wait to see these attractive new homes welcome residents.”

Project description

The new development will provide new, super-sustainable properties constructed using the Remagin Light Gauge Steel Framing (LGSF) system. Comprising of two blocks, the building is PassivHaus standards and Sigmat Ltd, trading as Remagin, stepped in to act as principal contractor to aid Sunderland City Council. The new Vaux neighbourhood, being built on the site of an old brewery, will have a total 1,000 homes, as part of a drive to double the number of people living in the city centre. Selected due to sustainability, cost, and speed of erection, Remagin’s scope of works included 2 blocks consisting of 25 apartments per block, delivering a total 3,038sqm gross internal floor area (GIFA).

Vaux is one of four new communities that will take shape at Riverside, forming the first of the new distinct neighbourhoods that will create city centre housing for up to 2,500 residents. All homes at Riverside Sunderland will provide a future living offer that will attract new and existing Sunderland residents to live in the vibrant city centre. The properties are situated alongside the orchards and allotments of Kingsley Gardens and nearby Riverside Park, which is continuing its journey towards becoming an accessible, attractive, and ecologically diverse parkland. In total, the team installed an impressive 1,700 linear metres of panels, lift shafts; and 30 balconies across 2 blocks and 6 storeys. Topping out following a 16-week programme, the installation demonstrates the onsite benefit of constructing in LGSF with speed on site offering a significant advantage.
